Powtoon Capture, the newest addition to the Powtoon Visual Communication Platform, enables you to quickly and easily record your screen, camera, or both. Powtoon Capture is an extension to the Google Chrome Web Browser and allows the user of the extension to create recordings of their screen via webcam/microphone or a combination of both.
- If your organization does not have any IT limitations on installing a Google Chrome browser extension, then you can download and install Powtoon Capture right away.
- If your organization does require additional IT administration, the technical explanations below can be shared with your IT administrative team.
Installation
Administrators of Google for Enterprise or Education accounts can whitelist, blacklist and
force install the extension on managed devices. For more information, please see the
Authentication
Powtoon capture is an extension to Powtoon's SaaS online product and as such relies on an
active browser session with Powtoon. Upon startup, the extension checks if an active
session is available and if not directs the user to the login page. Here the user authenticates
using the method set up by the organization's Powtoon administrator.
Operation
While recording, a video file is created locally using standard web browser APIs and is
securely uploaded in chunks to a cloud storage bucket using pre-signed URLs issued by
Powtoon's backend. The upload of the chunks starts immediately and on completion of the
recording by the user, Powtoon's backend takes over, concatenates the chunks to a single
video file and makes it available inside the Powtoon system like any other Powtoon video
created on our platform.
Security
The security profile of Powtoon Capture is identical to that of Powtoon's online video creation
product. The videos created using Powtoon Capture are available only to the creator very much like
videos uploaded to Powtoon from the user's computer.
All data transfer over the internet is encrypted using industry standard encryption protocols
and ciphers and video storage is encrypted at rest too.
The extension source code is reviewed by Google Chrome Web Store team to prevent
malicious activity and no remote code is executed inside the extension.
