Having Closed Captions is an important step in making your Powtoon accessible to all audiences. The Closed Captions will always be an SRT file.
What are Closed Captions in Powtoon?
Closed captions are the text version of the voice-overs and spoken audio in your Powtoon.
Downloading an MP4 & subtitles from the Workspace.
You will need to export your Powtoon as an mp4 in order to generate captions for the first time.
- While in the Workspace, click on the 3 vertical dots of the Powtoon.
- Click Download.
If you have previously exported your Powtoon, you will have the following options:
- Download MP4
This will automatically download the most recent MP4 file saved to the system. This will not include any changes made to the Powtoon since the previous export.
- Download Captions
This will automatically download the most recent SRT file saved to the system. This will not include any changes made to the Powtoon since the previous export.
- Re-export to MP4
This will create a new MP4 file, that will be based on the current version of your Powtoon. You can also update the closed captions by selecting this option. Use this if you have made changes in the studio since your last export.
3. Select the desired export quality of your Powtoon.
4. Click on the Include Captions toggle, and select the closed captions language.
The closed captions language needs to be the same as the spoken language of the Powtoon. If the voice-over is spoken in English, then select English for the closed caption language.
5. After the download process completes successfully, a message is displayed on the Powtoon player page. Click to download the MP4 and SRT file to your computer.
6. You will also receive an email with the MP4 and SRT file.
Downloading an MP4 & captions from the Studio.
- In the Studio, click on the Publish/Export Button.
- Click on Download MP4.
- Select the desired export quality of your Powtoon : 720p or 1080p
- Click on the Include captions toggle, and select the closed captions language
The closed captions language needs to be the same as the spoken language of the Powtoon. - After the download process completes successfully, a message is displayed on the Powtoon player page. Click to download the MP4 and SRT file to your computer.
- You will also receive an email with the MP4 and SRT file.
Downloading only the SRT file
If you have already generated the SRT file, then you can download a copy to your computer.
Note : This will not generate a new SRT file according. It will only download the SRT file already created. If you want to get an updated version of the SRT file, you will need to Re-export your Powtoon.
- While in the Workspace, click on the 3 vertical dots of the Powtoon.
- Click Download.
- Click Download Captions
- The Captions will begin to download to your computer immediately as an SRT file.
